It never gets old,  those who would have you believe the world is this crazy scary place, one that should not be explored....
I know this phrase is usually muttered from someone who cares about the person they're saying it too. I understand this love, but what I can't understand is how one could believe that anything outside your world is so dangerous. I'm not saying there is not some crazy stuff happening out there, there is!

What I do intend to put to rest is this myth that the world is a dangerous place.

I happen to have been born and raised in the U.S., and still reside here (for now). Most people that surround me have not even been to half of the destinations I have been too. But yet they seem to think the world I have seen is dangerous...very dangerous...like hostel steal your organs and murder you at night dangerous ( Damn Hollywood movies!!).

Now I am fully aware that these skeptics have good intentions but they cannot be faulted for what they have been indoctrinated into. Before I even begin this let's do an experiment together!

The Experiment

Experiment:  In 30 minutes or less, turn on your TV ( or use your computer)switch it to any news station. Now for the next 30 minutes or less count how many stories you view that involve something negative. They can include but are not limited to death, crimes, some sort of economic dilemma and so on.

Not to leave myself out,  I've already participated here are the results....

My Results:

Setup : 2 minutes of TV TIME - From the initial turning on of the TV I switched from one major news station to another.

Result 1:
My set was initially on ABC news which aired a story of a woman involved in embezzling taxpayer money.

Result 2:
I then switched to Fox news and they were covering a police standoff with a renegade police officer in some cabin ( I mean these things couldn't write themselves any better!)

RESULTS: Negativity is commonplace in the news, viewer beware !!

I mean if all you have seen in your lifetime is news stations broadcasting, mass murder this, genocide that, civil war in far away country, rape, murder etc etc. And repeat this over and over and over again, I could begin to formulate why one would think the world is scary. The news operates by fear mongering its audience. They operate off ratings and let's be honest, sadly someone dispersing medical aid to refugees doesn't get nearly as much ratings as a police chase in downtown Los Angeles.

So just to add a little fact aside from the experiment, I bring you this..

Crime Statistics Facts : Total crimes (most recent) by country

1. U.S.A -  11,877,218

2. U.K - 6,523,706

3. Germany - 6,507,394

4. France - 3,771,850

full view of list here -->  Total crime by country

No I didn't list all of them but let's take something into account just with these four. From an American perspective you might have assumed  nations in Africa, Asia or the Middle East would have the highest crime, isn't it quite surprising that the U.S ranks numero uno and the countries that follow happen to be top western European tourist destinations!?!

Believe me when I tell you don't believe everything you see on TV. Go out and enjoy the world. It is full of amazing, inspiring, humble, people that want the same things as you.

The world is only as scary as you make it out to be : )

Go find out for yourself !

Well said! Movies like TAKEN while totally awesome to watch (Who doesn't love Liam Neeson kicking ass?!) are totally brainwashing people. When I went to Argentina my family was convinced I would get kidnapped. Who the F wants to kidnap some random girl with no money? That's just too much work.

HAHAHA your definitely right, Liam Neeson kicking ass is always a good time!

Although hollywood movies may entertain we should never mistake them for reality. And your right why kidnap a broke American women, to much investment & no return !

BIG THANKS for checking out the site & for the comment : )

Hey! I just found your blog and I'm enjoying your recent posts. Travel is something which interests me, too, although I don't get to do a lot of it at the moment!
I think this is a very interesting post. I don't think it would matter where I went in the world, I would always have someone (my mum, probably!) telling me how "dangerous" it is "over there". You have to wonder where people get the idea from that this country they have never visited is so dangerous. And as you said - it's probably from the news!
I agree as well that movies give us bad impressions of countries... Eg. "Hostel" had everybody convinced that Slovakia was a country full of murderers. I even know someone from Slovakia who is so angry about the reputation that film gave her country.
That's why we need lovely travel blogs - to remind us that the world is a wonderful place. :)

Coco,

thank you for checking out iHeartTravel & I'm glad you like what you've seen : )

I understand where parents feelings come from but they too are almost always mistaken about the world.

Media influence in general is taking us away from all the greatness out in the world. It's why I had to write this post, to let others know that...

they should turn off the TV off and get out there!

Thanks for the lovely comment.
