Well the way this came about was kind of random (kind of the way I prefer things to happen). I had mentioned to my buddies that Montreal was on my radar of places to go this year. While on a trip to NYC back in may I mentioned this plan again. I got the attention of one friend, and soon after the attention of another.
While my buddy was on vacation a couple of weeks back in Florida, he mentioned to me that he would be coming back home with a few extra days to spare while on vacation. He threw out "Montreal" and I said " I'm in if I can free up my weekend!!"
While this was happening on one end of the friend spectrum I had already planted a travel seed in the mind of another friend. We had attended a mutual friends 4th of July party and I had re-mentioned my trip to Montreal. He was 50/50 about going because of the departure date ( 2 days later), but the next morning he very quickly said "I'm going!"
The following day we were off on the road all going to Montreal for the first time.
The Liquor store (LQ) Dilemma
As we sat & ate leisurely we asked the waiter where we could find the nearest LQ store. The waiter very calmly pointed out "Well its 9:50pm the last LQ store closes at 10pm, your about 5 blocks away from the nearest one".
We panicked how could this be its Friday night we need our vodka!!! So we kindly paid & began to run!!! People looked at us crazy as we ran, we couldn't pay no mind we needed that vodka!
So we stumble upon what seems to be a convenience store. As we look around no LQ just beer & wine.. NOOO! Much to our dismay the liquor is apart from where they sell beer & wine, so we had to settle on beer. After so much running we were tired, we went back to the hotel and begin to drink some brewskies.
We re-learned an amateur night out 101 lesson that night...never try to get drunk at a club! About 180 Canadian dollars between us and we had left the club with a buzz...although I must say it was a pretty good club.
So the next day we decide to take in the city. We setup a game plan and we're off. Being in old Montreal first we decide to explore it. We marvel in it picturesque architecture, the beautiful port that surrounds it, and the amazing day it turned out to be.
We then navigate to the metro to take the city by underground. As the day progresses we run into a random Caribbean parade in the middle of downtown!
The Liquor Store Dilemma Part 2
Later in the evening we begin to make plans for our evening. By the time we're back we already know the LQ store location, it's around 6pm and we set out to get that much needed vodka.
As we're getting closer and closer to the store we notice there seems to be no lights on, what gives? We continue to the front door, it locked! We all think " It's only 6pm, this can't be happening again!". After all the excitement we didn't even bother to check what times liquor is sold in Montreal. We glance at the door it reads “Saturday 11-17:30".....(that's 5:30 for those who don't read military time.)
Here we are again without vodka, and we really don't want to drink beer again. So we go to a store and ask the lovely young ladies where we can find any LQ store. She mentions the big jazz fest happening that weekend, and also mentions a relatively close LQ store that closes at 10pm. We get back to our hotel and ask the front desk for directions to the area. The polite man gets us directions, and we hop in a cab!
We get to the store and find a big line; it seems others in Montreal also need their liquor of preference! The prices were a little steep but we finally got our bottle.
Later in the evening we depart the hotel feeling pretty good. We're all in a festive mood ready for what the night will bring.
After a cab ride into downtown we find our way to a Salsa club and dance the rest of the night away!
Let me tell you there is nothing more attractive to me then a women who leisurely say's "Yes I speak French, Spanish, and English".... she had me at "Fr...”!
The next day we departed the lovely Montreal, the trip was a big success! I had checked another location off my travel list, and became acquainted with another lovely city.
jusqu'à ce que nous retrouverons montreal! (Until we meet again montreal!)
